The Old Man And The Sea

Blog #3

We all gathered at the Nelson Mandela statue and talked and talked and talked. We then took register and entered the theatre.

The theatre was red and fake, the ‘diamond pillow wall, ceiling and floor’ was just wallpaper and the place smelt of plastic. The overall effect was simple but ingenious. They had a seriously expensive tuck-shop which just about everyone bought from and we went in.

The show was brilliantly put together and the actors jumped from charecter to charecter effortlessly and brilliantly. I think most people actually only relised  that there was only three actors towards the end. The story itself was uneciting and flat, but the actors made it entertaining and fun to watch.

Plastocracy

Blog #2

A rather interesting group of people from a drama company came to my school to do a play. It was a effort to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and was about plastic-dump workers who made a man made of recycled materials who, upon awakening, spots a plastic shopping bag. The workers get back to their work whilst the plastic man goes after the bag. The bag gets picked up by a gust of wind which blows it through South Africa to the ocean. It then shows his journey following the bag, during which he is christened “Jeremy” by a eccentric town dweller.

It was a very well-thought out play with funny characters and well preformed, although most of the time I didn’t know what was going on.

Konstantin Stanislavski

Konstantin Stanislavski lived from 1863-1938. He was widely recognized as a great actor and was known as one of the leading theater directors. He was famous for his theory of acting, which is certain techniques and questions which enable the actor to show authentic emotion on stage and to immerse oneself in the characters scenario.

Here are the questions and how to apply them. (Based on fictional character)

Who am I? An idealistic teacher, actively striving to provide guidance and a sense of direction to her young students.

Where am I? In a classroom in a primary school. In a upper class suburban area.

What time is it? It is in the 2000s, autumn-winter and just before noon.

What do I want? To provide safety and security in the event of fire.

Why do I want it? To help prepare my students in the event of fire.

How will I get what I want? I will guide my students step by step through the drill.

What must I overcome in order to achieve it? Their want to hold on to their material possessions and their urge to talk.

Stanislavski’s system.
